Juan Cangas, Summer 2008 Internship in Washington, D.C.

Juan Cangas, UNL McNair Master Scholar, participated as an intern for eight weeks in Summer 2008 through the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) in Washington, D.C. His specific internship placement was in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) where “a great deal of [his] time was spent communicating with the 21 liaisons and trying to get everyone on the same page so things could be done in unison.” Juan said that he gained a “great sense of confidence” during the course of the summer from “interacting with Congressmen, Congresswomen, Senators, Business Executives, Commissioners, and Presidential Cabinet Secretaries on a daily basis.” Now he feels like he “can go up and strike a conversation or work with anybody.”

In a typical day, Juan took the Metro to work, and he would then “read at least three newspapers (Politico, Roll Call, and either USA today or New York Times) to get filled in on what was going on in the world and on the Hill.” In addition to sending daily action item reminders to the 21 liaisons, his position also “consisted of attending Congressional Hearings and informationals to become more informed of certain issues being discussed in the Hill.” The networking was “the best part of being on the Hill,” and Juan took every opportunity to get his name out there.

Great job, Juan!
